RAID AUSTRALIA 2004

Welcome to the official web site of Citroën Raid Australia 2004

"Raid South Eastern Odyssey"
13th March - 9th April 2004

Raid Australia presents its 5th Raid -"Raid South Eastern Odyssey" .

The 5th Australian Raid covers a large and diversified area of south eastern Australia. A true adventure trip of a lifetime. It will show Raiders a fantastic cross section of what Australia has to offer. From the mountains, to the remote outback, to the desert, to the sea, and ending in our Capital City: all will be revealed in "Raid South Eastern Odyssey"

Closing Dates
Registration for overseas Raiders closed.
Registration for Australian Raiders closed.

What is a "Raid"
An Australian Citroën Raid is an adventure trip, in a Citroën 2CV, which covers an area of  Australia. It is not a rally or a race. It is a unique combination of Citroën cars, people, outback travel, camping and scenery; together with a challenge. International friendships are formed. All four previous Raids have proven to be "unforgettable trips of a lifetime".
Most overseas Raid participants ship their cars to Australia.

What cars are allowed
Whilst Raid is predominantly for Citroën 2CV or derivatives, all Citroën Cars are allowed and welcomed. These cars agree to support the 2CV cars.

History of Raid in Australia
A total of some 200 cars and approx. 400 people have participated in the 4 Australian Raids held to date.
The first Australian Raid was held in 1988 and covered the Gunbarrel Highway track across central Australia from Perth to Sydney. The second followed in 1992 and covered the top end of Australia. The third in 1996 covered the Northern Territory and Western Australia. The fourth Australian Raid in 2000 from Alice Springs, the Red Centre, to Cape York, the extreme northeast.

Compared to Raid 2000

Raid 2004 will be held at a different time of the year to the last Raid, namely March/April. The proposed route is considered to be less difficult compared to Raid 2000 as the roads are in closer proximity to the population base in South Eastern Australia, although some very rough section have now been included.
Roads are generally well formed gravel or bitumen, and Peta states that the plan is to have around five "rest" days where Raiders would camp for two nights in a row.
Much particular and general information can be found on the old Raid 2000 web site. Please use the Info Menu at the bottom of this page and click "Info Raid 2000".

Raid fee
The entry fee per car is AUD 600. The full fee will be paid upfront.
However withdrawals notified in writing (or email)  up to one month prior to the start of the Raid will be refunded in full. Withdrawals after this date will receive the entry fee less AUD 100 back.

This fee covers organisational costs, survey costs, all campground fees, magazines, postage, first aid supplies, flying
doctor radio/telecommunications, 4WD expenses, sweat shirts (2 per car) and stickers, etc.

Advice for overseas Raiders

Whilst this web site has followed a discussion on radio communication for Raiders interest, it should be noted that the official requirement is that each car must be equipped with a fitted 40 channel UHF radio.
This UHF set is usually fitted somewhere under the dash of the car and is connected to the electrical system of the car. Each Raider has agreed to this by ticking the "I accept" - box upon entering the Raid registration form. The decision for UHF radio was made for safety reasons.

Every car must carry an appropriate first aid kit.

Cars need to arrive in Australia totally clean inside and out, including underneath body parts. The chassis should be clean and free from dirt and soil. Cars not passing customs inspection may need to be steam cleaned - an expensive procedure.

The committee is of the belief that under current Australian law it is difficult to import and subsequently sell a 2CV in Australia. The committee therefore suggests that you not attempt to import a car into Australia.
Committee members will not be available to help with this pursuit.
Raiders are advised to obtain a Carnet de Passage for their car - usually available from their motoring organisation (e.g. in Germany the ADAC).

As the Raid will start closest to Melbourne  - the committee strongly requests that all vehicles be shipped to the Port of Melbourne so that, as David Gries puts it  "so we could get them all through customs and registration together".

In this regard the committee strongly suggests that your vehicle arrives in the Port of Melbourne by
28th February 2004 and that the Raider arrives at the latest by 6th March. (Car minimum 2 weeks and Raider minimum 1 week prior to start of Raid.)

You will need this time to arrange vehicle clearance,
to obtain a Traffic Accident Cover (TAC) using Form TAC 85 from a VIC Roads office,
and to obtain Third Party Property Insurance,
also final car adjustments and food purchases, etc.

Raiders needing accommodation in Melbourne may contact Helen and Ted Cross, who have kindly offered to place Raiders with Citroën Club members.

UHF - from Henry Sheil (car 43)
Chaps,
I have found that for WA RAIDERs we can rent a 40 ch UHF CB set incl. antenna from the WA CB Centre at 406 Newcastle St on 9227 1523 for $20/week. Seems better than waiting to get one from Melbourne.
The contact there is Ken, just mention the Citroen bush adventure. He seems pretty competent from his telephone manner.

John Katona (car 54) in the spirit of the Raid has made the following kind offer:
Hi guys,

...By the way , we can accomodate a team of two in our humble abode just outside Melbourne ,but I would prefer french speaking bods because Alison is into learning french for our very long 2005 trip to visit my parents and generally France . Do you know if anybody would be interrested in the offer ? Having imported some cars I could also help with the collection and storage of 2CVs ( together with David) as I have a very large workshop with hoist for those who need to do last minute "things" to their cars , all on a hectare
(enough room really to store short term a couple of dozen cars + !!! ). Give me enough lead time so I can do a bit of tidying up ( in the workshop that is ! )
Au revoir ,

Brand new 145 x 15 tyres available in Australia.

After some 14 weeks off work after his knee operation we are pleased to hear that Raider Bruce "Father Goose" is back at work.

David Gries may be teaming up with other well known Citroën enthusiast Bob Dirks in his Citroën C35 truck to act as "tail end charlie". They will carry tools, some spare parts and welding equipment. They will always be the last vehicle in order to ensure, when possible, that no car is left behind due to a mechanical problem.

Raiders will remember the Quinkan Hotel in Laura, where we had the Cane Toad Race... we were saddened to hear that the Hotel had burnt to the ground.

Our unique experience crossing the Wenlock River - most of us on the back of the truck, and some of us keen enough to cross in our own cars - will never be the same again, as a concrete bridge has been built.

The ultimate fate of a particular GS up North...

Have a look at the new website of Peter Fosselius

Raiders may wish to send their get well wishes to Peta Carter who is still suffering from a bad virus infection.

We wish well loved Raider Bruce "Father Goose" good recovery after his recent knee operation.

Suggestions, Comments, Emails received

30.01.2004 - Michael Mohr has a car for sale after the Raid:
Hy guys,
thanks for that wonderful work you did with this web page! It is always fun to read through it!
Also it is good to see that we are included in the Raid mob again :)
Like always, we have a Raid car for sale after the Citroen meeting in Canberra. If things go right, it will be a WA registered, RHD, 1976, white 2 CV 6, available in Canberra or afterwards in Sydney, parked at Joe and Helen Schembri's place. The car is - like always - prepared to Raid standards. It has a brandnew chassis, clutch, front brake, exhaust system, roof, tyres etc., etc.
I will exchange all the worn out parts like shock absorbers, king pins if necessary (and if the spare parts are still in the boot after the car's arrival in Fremantle :) after the Raid.
Looking forward to seeyall and for some CHEERS! Micha.

20.01.2004 - David Stewart asks:
Hi guys,
....I was wondering, would it be possible for the NSW raiders to travel in convoy to Penola? Due to work commitments, I can only leave Sydney on the 10 March. Are there any planned rendezvous of a general chit chat how are you doing this sort of thing before the event starts?
Hope all is progressing well from your end. I am at that stage where the chassis is separated and being welded, the body is off to the panel shop and the other bits are looking better each day.

25.12.2003 - Ad Verburg asks:
Trying to buy a 2cv in Australia; if there are good offers, let me know
Comments: Still looking for australian 2 CV and co-driver

November/October 2003 - Discussion about availability of tyres in Australia - please click here.

07.10.2003 - Private customs agent Bob Gosling has offered to assist Raiders with not only car import but also Carnet de Passage. He is offering his services for the customs and quarantine clearance formalities. He also advises that he maybe able to put together two or more vehicles for shipping purposes which would share the costs between owners and save them on freight and handling costs.
Further Bob says:"...,I am happy to provide a reduced service charge at this end (by $100 per vehicle) to show my interest in working with your Raid members. 2CV Owners have been very kind to my company over the last 10 years and I would like to show my appreciation as a financial incentive."
Please email Bob or take a look at the Freight Plan website.
The Raid website and the Raid committee are unable to make any recommendation on the above offer as it is the responsibility of Raiders to make their own commercial decisions and arrangements.

07.10.2003 - Frenchmen Pascal looking to be a Co-Raider. Check out his fantastic 2CV museum.
Hi !
My name is Pascal, I live in the east of France and I am a 2CV enthusiast and collecting them for more than 10 years !
I've just found information about your Raid Australia 2004 ! And it sounds really exciting to me !
I am sure that this would be the experience of a lifetime and I wish I could join your Raid.
One thing is sure, time is too short for me to get a car well prepared for the raid, and I think the only way for me to join you would be as a co-driver ! And my question is to ask if anybody needs a co-driver for the raid, if this would be the case I would love to join ! I already planned to come over in Australia this winter but for professional reasons I had to cancel it, and I'm sure that travelling in a 2cv in Australia must be the greatest way to discover Australians and Australia. Do not hesitate to contact me if you know anyone looking for a co-driver!
For your information, I run with some friends a museum dedicated to the 2CV where you can get some more information at this web address :
http://bosch.christian.free.fr/site2cv/club.htm and then click on "Visiter le Musée" (sorry it is only in French).
You will find herewith a view of the museum !
Hope to hear from you !
Have a good day
Pascal

25.09.2003 - John Katona sent the following suggestion:
Hi Steve, Anja,
Thanks for updates. Site is looking good and certainly reflects the enormous amount of input.
….On the subject of CB radios, I have done some research and spoken to quite a few experts (?) in the field , and all seem to agree that good hand held units (between $200 & $300) are mainly for people wanting to communicate in emergency situations where the unit is switched on only when communicating and is not suitable for in car use with unit switched on all of the time so as to talk from car to car as you will not be able to hear any conversation unless the unit is to your ear. Battery life for these hand held units is very short if left on and need to be recharged with special adaptors. An in car unit does away with all these problems. I have elected to hire the latest UHF Electrophone unit from Rent a 2 Way in
Melbourne for the minimal cost of $22 / week including an aerial. If any body is interested in this solution, I will be glad to help as it is close to work and I have already established contact .P.S.: the old VHF CB's are all but dead.
Please note I will be registering "Deuche" Alison and myself soon, soon, I promise.
Cheers, J.K.

19.04.2003 - Allison Burr in car 8 made the following comment: Very excited but nervous about what we are embarking on.  The work  that needs  doing to prepare the car seems rather daunting as I am half way through trying to bring a 1958 AZ up together.  Oh well one for Brian to do.  He could do with the practice!!
Seriously though we are looking forward to it and to making some new friends (I hope)."

07.04.2003 - Andreas Belz in car 5 made the following suggestion: "Maybe it's a good idea to ask for mobile-phone numbers too; we have very good experience in using cell phones during Raid-Laponie, wherever this was possible. 0160 / 55 16 343."

05.04.2003 - Ralph Hibble in car 1 made the following comment: "LET THE RAID BEGIN".
The West Australian raiders are now using 40 channel UHF radios.  Small hand held units can be bought for less than $100 and are excellent for communication up to about 3km. Should we make this a new standard?? or a secondary standard?  These hand held units they can be carried with groups that are on foot away from the camp or the cars and give an added safety feature. Beancan has all three CB, UHF, and hand held UHF.
cheers bastards and hugs to you all."

This web site is produced by Steve Wedell for the Raid Australia Committee and edited by Anja Ahrens. The Raid committee is a group of volunteers from Citroën Car Clubs in the major cities of Australia. The committee runs each Raid on a non-profit basis for the benefit of Raiders. It is not a race or rally. It is an adventure which brings together people from many countries whose common interest is a love for that loveable hardy, long lived and ubiquitous automobile, the Citroën 2CV.
The Raid Committee accepts no responsibility for cars or people. The Committee acts only as a medium to bring the Raiders together for an adventure of a lifetime. You join the Raid voluntarily and entirely at your own risk.
