Actual broken rear swing arm on Gibb River Road,
Raid Australia 1996

Soft Springs

Philippe Mortier (Raid Australia 96 veteran) presents his thoughts on wether to raise the suspension on a 2CV to compensate for overloading.

Don't do it (well not a lot anyway).
Experience on the last Aussie raid was that raising the suspension to compensate for over loading led to failure of the suspension arms.
What actually happens is that with the shortened tie rods the suspension will bottom out in the spring boxes, and not on the bump
stops. This overloads the anchors where the tie rods are attached to the arms, and rips them off. (Where's Aunty Jack ?)
The arms literally unstitch at the seams, starting with the anchor plate welds.
In anticipation to your next question, as Raid 96 veteran,I don't
recomend strengthening anything. You just push the problem up the line. eg soft rims bend. period. stronger rims bend arms, stronger arms bend chassis. Beyond that you're better off in a Tojo. Just travel light and pick the right line.
Cheers
Philippe
