CITROËN 2CV RAID AUSTRALIA 2000

News #1

"Mainzelmännchen"

The giant Western Australian Flag almost overwhelms the small 2CV "Beancan".

"Beancan" was borrowed from Ralph Hibble by Anke Thomasky and Andreas Belz after their already Raid 2000 prepared 2CV was badly damaged during transportation between Darwin and Perth.

Anke and Andreas went on to have an enjoyable holiday trip in the South of Western Australia.

The damaged car is currently the subject of an insurance dispute, and it is hoped that it will be repaired in time for the Raid.

"Once a Raider always a Raider"

On the 25th April 1999 the Raid web site received the following message from 1988 Raider Olaf Baumann:

Hi Steve
I found an Article (AUS2CV.JPG) in a Magazine "Planet 2CV" (PLANET2CV.JPG) about the new Raid 2000, and went straight to your Website. It´s nice to see myself (Raid88repair.jpg - blue T-Shirt) on an Australian Website.
I just mail to say hello to all of you Down Under, and wish you all the best for that next Raid.
Greetings to Ralph and Hanny Hibble - they visited us here in Germany.
Of course greetings to all people from the Raid88.
Since 1988 my life changed a little bit, new Job, new girlfriend :-). Since Then I drove a Citroën Visa an a BX. But now I drive an OPEL (Holden?) - a company car :-(.
I´m sure I will travel to AUS again, but by now I don´t know when.

Jost Hashoff

David Gries gives us the following story re Jost Hashof. It goes something like this:

Jost is to finish his 1999 Australian holiday and return his car to the Alice Springs Car Museum where it is kept. He decides to spend some time with his friend at Curtain Springs en route and parks his loaded car with all his belongings, clothes, papers etc in the Curtain Springs compound ready for an early start.

After some CHEERS Jost returns to the compound to pick up his car, but it and all his papers, passport, return air tickets, keys etc., are gone, the car had been stolen. Somehow he gets himself to Melbourne where David Gries, Ruthard Wolf, and Jan Dirk are there to pick him up. They battle their way back though the traffic to arrive at Davids house to find out Jost had left his small bag at the Airport !!

The stolen car was later found with the aid of a helicopter search near a community settlement camp near Ayers Rock, and taken back to the museum in Alice Springs. In the meantime Jost obtained some new papers and a temporary passport from the German Embassy and has returned home. We have heard that the windows were all smashed and some panel damage has occurred. We understand that David Gries may be planning a rescue trip to Alice Springs.

As Jost would say:  "
SHIT HAPPENS !".
