David Gries, our committeeman in Victoria and Raid 1996 Leader has forwarded to the Raid Website the following letter. It is presented here without alteration. David advises that he has not yet looked at the Raid website. David, a superb 2CV technician has participated in all Australian Raids and was a committeeman on the last two.
Raid 2000 Up date David Gries This is a guide only. Do your home work check with Canberra, Customs, Quarantine, State motor registration, raid committee and raiders who have done this before. Before you ship your car or you may find your self in trouble, and we maybe unable to assist. We will help all we can but our time in the last month before raid will be very hectic. I my self will be leaving home Melbourne at the end of July as I intend starting from Cape Leewin WA. Those raiders intending to import their 2cv are able to do so. Non Australian resident citizen only. You will have to apply to Canberra ACT Federal Bureau of Transport And apply for a Personally Imported Vehicle form. You will have to do much the same as in 1996 Make sure that you have owned and operated he car for three months or more and it is registered in your name. Now most important you can only bring a 2cv 15 years or more older in to Australia That is 1985 or earlier, as long your paper work says so?. Make sure when you fill out the form that it is a personal import. Bring only RHD cars ..You will have to register your car in the state you arrive in. Each state has different compliance and registration requirements. Check with state raid committee person. As a personal import can only be registered by you. If a resident tried to register the car for the first time they would have a very expensive time of it. And they would most unlikely buy or pay too much for it It would sell as a wrecking proposition. Make sure your car is raid worthy and road worthy Make sure your car is fairly original rust and damage free. It will make it more attractive to sell after raid. Most Australians looking to buy a 2cv after raid now know what they are looking at and know problems that 2cvs suffer from. So if it needs a new frame or head light do it before you ship or bring it along to be fitted after raid or sold to the new owner. The price of 2cvs here is dropping they now fetch between $4000 and $10000 Aus. Some may fetch more if they are in exceptional original mint Not ex raid cars. There is a good demand for 2cvs in the $ 6000 Aus. price range at the moment. Most cars sold fairly quickly after raid 96. 1 cannot predict what the market will be like after raid 2000.There is still a demand for2cvs even one or two vans. Other A series models are not as well known as the 2cv. And may have difficulty selling. Don't expect all cars to sell quickly. Having say 10 2cvs on the market at one time is a very large number. Where the raid finishes is along way away from the main state cities. And you may have to drive your car back there to sell it. There will be no place to leave your car where raid finishes. What will make ex raid 2cvs attractive here is there here, they are OZ registered, they are attractively priced , standard original cars, 2cvs that can be restored into better cars. Some cars priced at $4000 sound but needing work paint body work etc. sold very quickly before raid end. What we call a rusty 2cv you would call a restorers dream. It may pay to advertise your car that it will be for sale after raid. In raid magazine, OZ Citroen club newsletters, most clubs have web sites Aus. Car sellers magazines. Sold through OZ Allow seven to ten days to clear, pick up, register your car Itemize all parts camping gear etc. for customs. Do not under declare the value of your car to customs. Put down fair market price as -for Europe. As you are importing the car and parts but taking the rest back with you. Make very sure your car is clean no dirt or mud underneath before you ship, as Quarantine will make you take the car to be cleaned at your expense. So start now if you intend to sell your car after raid. Let raid committee know your intention when you intend to ship and where to and when you arrive in OZ. Let us know now if you want import and sell your car, also model color etc. so we know numbers so we can advise you if we think there will be too many cars at one time. To try and predict the market for you. We may have to put a limit on the number of cars imported, as you may have trouble selling. Try to ship all together or in groupies, including cars on carnet to make it easier for us. Could you please translate to your language.
